A very positive article in Time magazine ("Singapore's New Look") about Singapore at

I believe the journalist forgets one important issue: freedom. No country can be innovative, cosmopolitan and "fun to live in" if there is no freedom of speech, gathering, press and demonstrations. Educated and intelligent Singaporeans who have the chance to emigrate will continue to do so if they can't express themselves freely. Sure, the casinos will attract a lot of foreign investment and tourists. (and money-launderers!) So I am quite sure this will give a boost to the Singapore economy. However, longer term what the country needs is freedom. It is extremely important. Let's just hope that future governments of Singapore will work for the benefit of its citizens and not just for their own fat pay cheques.
