January is the worst month
Almost 40% of the Dutch feel more depressed in January than in any other month, according to research. The main reasons given for the gloom are a disappointing pay slip and lack of perspective for the future. British research had shown earlier that 24 January is the worst day of the year. January has been long regarded as the darkest of months, with foul weather, debt, fading Christmas memories, failed resolutions and a lack of motivation conspiring to depress. Here in the Netherlands, only 1% of those questioned said they feel at their best in January. Looking out of my office window today I had every reason to be depressed but I still manage to remain reasonably up-beat.
